Design for publication Zoo-topia - on zoo architecture as taxonomies of national representation. The book accompanied a symposium that explored the role of architecture within zoological gardens, the zoo as a showcase of Modernist architecture and a place of fantasy/escape in the Modern city. It was held in London Zoo as a part of the London Festival of Architecture. Speakers included David Crowley, Marcus Coates, Zsófia Frazon, Anthony Gall, Jack Tan, Richard Wentworth and Ian Wiblin.

The publication was designed to reflect the experience of interpretative systems of zoos and galleries, with no beginning or end, enabling the reader to navigate their way through the content using the inserted map of content. The publication includes commissioned work by Anca Benera, Yona Friedman, Bahbak Hashemi-Nezhad, Candida Höfer, Szabolcs KissPál, Wesley Meuris, Ahmet Ögüt and Société Réaliste.

Art of Change: New Directions from China, focuses on contemporary installation and performance art from China. Artists include Chen Zhen, Yingmei Duan, Gu Dexin, Liang Shaoji, Peng Yu and Sun Yuan, Wang Jianwei, Xu Zhen and MadeIn Company.

Change is deeply rooted in Eastern philosophy. The exhibition focuses on works that deal with transformation and discontinuity, looking at how these themes are conveyed through action or materials.

On the theme of change, we focused on developing a new format of the book, whilst maintaining a sense of traditional chinese book making. The grid of images enables the reader to see only sections of the artists work, therefore highlighting the momentary nature of the artwork. Within the publication and exhibition we used a system of zoom in/zoom out, drawing upon the Chinese dazibaos used in the Cultural revolution.

We investigated everyday language and how standardised digital writing could be reconsidered to emphasise on emotion. If we bring human imperfection and sensitivity back to digital communication, could the expression be improved?

All content was collected during the ‘words-in-process’ workshops at RCA in December 2011. Thanks to everyone who participated and special thanks to Alex, Giulia, Laura, Livia, Marine, Miwon, Rachel, Sophie, Stuart, Susanne, Thomas, Ruben, Marten, Robin & Oscar.

The written alphabet was created from the oral language. Therefore symbols like full stops and commas replace bodily indicators such as pauses and breathes. Through digital communication the written words have become strongly influenced by the oral language as it partly replaces face to face dialogues. How can we restructure the written alphabet to express the spontaneous nature of digital dialogues?
